ABOUT US

Get to know who FREAKFLAG is, why we do band merch and who we do band shirts for.

WHAT THE FUCK IS A FREAKFLAG? WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Just be yourself. Freakflag (idiomatic), unconventional or unrestrained behaviour; extreme, nonconformist views; the side of one's personality which harbours a tendency toward such behaviour or such views.

Where the fuck does it come from?

The phrase "freak flag" reportedly originated from song lyrics for "If 6 Was 9" (1967) by Jimi Hendrix and was popularized by its use in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's counterculture anthem "Almost Cut My Hair".The above may be true, but we're lying about knowing this before we named the company. We got the idea from the Devil Wears Prada. Not the band- the movie. It was a happy coincidence that it was music related.

Why though?

It's a message of tolerance and acceptance of not just other people, but of who you are. It's a call not to judge other people but also not to judge yourself too harshly.

Have you ever googled, "where to purchase band t-shirts & band merch in South Africa?"

If you're a music fan living in South Africa, you'll know that finding band merchandise can be a real challenge. In fact, it's not uncommon to spend hours searching high and low for that one band t-shirt or poster, trying every variation of “band t", “band merch”, “band shirt” or “band t-shirt”, that you can think of, only to come up empty-handed. Finding band merchandise is harder than trying to find a needle in a haystack. It's like searching for a unicorn in the wild, or a better band than (insert your fav band here)—impossible! You might as well spend your time trying to teach a cat to swim, or Nickelback to be good. Don't bother wasting your energy, just sit back and enjoy the music sans merchandise. Sorry.

But why is it so hard to find band merch in South Africa?

It's a message of tolerance and acceptance of not just other people, but of who you are. It's a call not to judge Well, there are a few reasons. Firstly, South Africa is a relatively small market compared to other countries, which means that many bands and their record labels simply don't bother to release their merch here. Secondly, shipping costs can be prohibitive, which makes it difficult for small independent stores to import band merchandise from overseas. For example, a popular band like Metallica may only have limited distribution channels in South Africa, and the cost of importing merchandise is exorbitant. This results in a lack of variety and availability  in local stores, leaving fans to resort to Whiskey in the Jar.people but also not to judge yourself too harshly.

BUT NOT ANYMORE.

You've found an online store that specializes in manufacturing local merchandise, importing band merchandise from all over the world, and providing unique, affordable alternative clothing to South Africans. FREAKFLAG believes that music has the power to bring people together and the store aims to create a community of music lovers who can express themselves through their favourite band's merchandise and most importantly, to provide a platform for local artists and musicians to showcase their talent and sell theirs.
